Cantors sing to support Argentine Jews

The Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix presents "Sacred Tango: With Love from Argentina to America" 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, at Temple Chai, 4645 E. Marilyn Road, Phoenix.

Rabbi Sergio Bergman, creator of Fundacion Judaica, and Argentine cantors Silvina Chemen, Diego Rubinsztein and Sheila Nesis will perform a concert of Argentine, Ladino, Yiddish and American Jewish music. Fundacion Judaica is a network of synagogues and social institutions that provide services, food, clothing and medicine to the demoralized and financially devastated Jewish community in Argentina.

Michelle Steinberg, director of the Jewish Community Relations Council, says concert attendees will receive "an opportunity to have a clearer and more comprehensive understanding of Jews in other parts of the world. Lots of people don't understand there are Jews in need in Latin America ... and how great the need is in terms of everyday things."

Other event sponsors include Chaparral Suites, Temple Beth Israel, Temple B'rith Shalom, Temple Chai, Temple Emanuel, Temple Gan Elohim, Temple Kol Ami, Temple Solel, Union for Reform Judaism and Yad b' Yad of the World Union for Progressive Judaism. Jewish News is the media sponsor. Cost is $18-$125.

Call Michelle Steinberg, 480-634-4900, ext. 1120.
