Local artists raise funds for Jess Schwartz students

When Jess Schwartz Jewish Community High School holds its next big fund-raising event, there's no need to break out any formal wear. On Sunday, Feb. 13, the Parent Teacher Organization will hold an art walk at Temple Chai.

"We were just trying to do something different from the balls and the dances - something extraordinary," said Donna Troisi, PTO secretary-treasurer and fund-raising chairwoman. Adults can nosh on wine and cheese as they browse through the art, while Dippin' Dots ice cream will be available for children.

Twenty-five local artists will have their work on display at the event, and they will donate a portion of their proceeds to Jess Schwartz. Troisi said some of the artists are involved with the school directly - like Elena Thornton, whose son attends Jess Schwartz - while others were invited to participate through their involvement with J.A.V.A., the Jewish Artists of the Valley Association.

Troisi said the PTO will use the funds to provide scholarships for juniors and seniors to go to Israel, as well as provide for the day-to-day needs of the school.

Next up for Jess Schwartz will be a fund-raising chef's night and raffle on March 20. At a private home, attendees will be treated to an evening of gourmet recipes and a raffle with prizes valued at up to $4,000.
