Tu B'Shevat

Tu B'Shevat - also known as the new year for trees or a Jewish Earth Day - falls on Tuesday, Jan. 25, this year. Jews celebrate by planting trees, eating fruit associated with Israel and sending money to plant trees in Israel. Below is a list of local celebrations.

SUNDAY/JAN. 23
Beth Emeth Congregation - 10:30 a.m. Tu B'Shevat seder. Brunch. 13702 W. Meeker Blvd., Sun City West. Call 623-584-7210.

Family picnic - 9:30 am.-noon. Chabad of the East Valley at Desert Breeze Park in Chandler. Relay races, family-tree craft, balloon launch. Call 480-855-4333.

Nature hike with The New Shul - 10 a.m. Lori Faeth, policy adviser to the governor for Natural Resources and the Environment, will lead the hike. Call 480-515-2272.

Fun with the family at the JCC- 9:45-11:45 a.m. Tu B'Shevat seder for families with children ages 2-5. First hour is the program, second hour is for parents to enjoy the JCC. VOSJCC, 12701 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale. Cost is $20 member, $30 nonmember. Call 480-659-7769, ext. 1703.

TUESDAY/JAN. 25

Communitywide Tu B'Shevat Festival - Noon-4 p.m. Jewish National Fund. Tree planting ceremony, folk dancing, Israeli wine tasting, arts and crafts, rides and slides, and Israeli fashion show, seders, Israeli vendors and local Jewish artists. Music by Limelight. Free.
