Obituaries

Molly S. Grossman

Molly S. Grossman of Phoenix died Jan. 13, 2005. She was 97. She was born in Hartford, Conn., and moved to Arizona from New York in 1996. She was a gift shop owner and secretary. She was a former member of Hadassah.

Survivors include her daughter, Mona Gower of Phoenix; son, Edmund of New York; brother, Simon Schwartz of Washington state; one grandchild; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held in Paramus, N.J. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary.

Saul Stravitz

Saul Stravitz died Jan. 17, 2005. He was 85.

Survivors include his daughter, Shelley Bolton; sons, Russell and Mark; stepson, Jim Velinsky; and seven grandchildren.

Arrangements were made by Green Acres Mortuary.

Contributions are suggested to the Temple Chai Childhood Center Fund, 4645 E. Marilyn Road, Phoenix 85032.



Mary T. Fluhr

Mary T. Fluhr of Paradise Valley died Jan. 17, 2005. She was 79. She was born in Milwaukee, Wis., and moved to Arizona in 1977. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Har Zion Congregation.

Survivors include her daughters, Avivah of Phoenix, Sharon Leifer of Gadersbery, Md., and Raleigh Sweet of Henderson, Nev.; sons, Bernard and Samuel of Milwaukee, Wis.; sister, Ida Potash of Los Angeles; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Sinai Mortuary Chapel. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary.

Contributions are suggested to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix 85014.



David R. Halabe

David R. Halabe of Surprise died January 19, 2005, at the age of 69. David was born in Brooklyn, NY, but spent most of his youth in Michigan. After graduating from Wayne State University in Detroit, he moved to Los Angeles, CA, where he earned his Masters degree at USC. After 40 years of service to the LA Unified School District, as teacher, media coordinator and finally adult school administrator, David retired to Arizona in 1999.

David is survived by his wife Linda; son and daughter Stuart and Michelle of Las Vegas, NV; daughters Susan (Mark) Weiss-Shannon of Sacramento, CA, and Karen (Brian) Reff of Northridge, CA; and son Jonathan (Amy) Weiss. He is also survived by brother Jack (Maxine) of Redmond, WA, and sister Lucille of Los Angeles. David will be sorely missed by grandchildren Daniel and Taylor; Caitlyn, Joel and Courtney Shannon; Jesse, Hannah and Benjamin Reff; and Jack Weiss.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 21st at Sinai Mortuary Chapel, 4538 N. 16th Street in Phoenix. The family suggests that charitable contributions be made in David's memory in lieu of flowers.



Bryan David Fastenberg

Bryan David Fastenberg, 21, left this world on January 15, 2005. Born in Chicago on May 8, 1983, Bryan was the loving son of Francine and Nathaniel, grandson of Adele Colton, and brother of Rachel and Sara. He graduated Phoenix Country Day School and attended the University of Oregon. Bryan had a creative essence expressed in drawings and culinary skills. He was a sensitive and caring young man whose warmth and sincerity was freely felt by all those privileged to share his company. He touched the hearts of many friends who, together with family, will carry his spirit with them forever.

Graveside memorial services were held on January 18, at Green Acres Cemetery in Scottsdale. Arrangements entrusted to Sinai Mortuary, (602) 248-0030. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Camp Charles Pearlstein, c/o Temple Beth Israel, 10460 N. 56th Street, Scottsdale, AZ 85253.



Julius Schechtman

Julius Schechtman, 87, beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather was born September 2, 1917, in Chicago, to Sarah (Natkin) and Isadore. He passed away in Scottsdale on January 16, 2005. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Sol (Shirley). He was a devoted husband of the late Doris (Steinman), and the late Evelyn (Kahn).

He was proud of his daughters Betty Stallman, Merle (Howard) Tolchin, and his stepson Jamie (Cathy) Horton; his grandchildren Rachel (Lonnie) Beal, Jason Stallman, Rebecca (Barry) Shevat, Debi Stallman, Dayna Tolchin; step-grandchildren Patricia, Robert, Nathan, Aaron, Becca, and Missy Horton; and his great-granddaughters Katherine, Jordyn, Sydney, and Sophie.

A long time resident of Chicago, he was a member of B'nai B'rith and Temple Shalom, and was an accountant with Cottle & Cottle until his retirement. He moved to Scottsdale in 2002. He was a 17-year prostate cancer survivor who enjoyed world travel.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, January 19th at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale. Contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 2929 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix, AZ 85016. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.
