Campus kosher deli opens

Kosher food is available again at the Ina Levine Jewish Community Campus in Scottsdale.

Dad's Deli is serving a limited menu of sandwiches, soups, hot dogs and other items to campus visitors.

The meat restaurant, under the supervision of the Greater Phoenix Vaad Hakashruth, opened Jan. 4 and is training its staff and testing recipes.

It will introduce a full menu on Feb. 1.

This is the first venture into kosher cuisine for owner Andrew Fielman, who previously ran a Wild Noodles franchise in Phoenix.

"Being kosher is not a difficult thing," he said. So many kosher products are available, "it's just finding the right flavor combinations that work."

All food is made fresh on the premises, Fielman said, and he prepares original recipes. His goal is to make the deli a "destination for the community by having good food."

Future plans include Shabbat-to-go and themed dinners.

The deli also will prepare meals for the Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center preschool, and may make meals for seniors at the JCC Senior Center once it moves from its current location, Fielman said.

Irwin Kanefsky, JCC president, says details have not been finalized with regard to the senior center.

The deli, which rents space from the campus, will also provide catering for campus events and offer catering for private functions.

Dad's Deli was named by Fielman's children Sarah, 7, and Max, 5. He and his wife Mindy are charter members of the JCC and belong to Har Zion Congregation in Scottsdale.

Feilman wants to make the campus deli a "destination for Jews to come and talk and eat - to make it a social environment."

Danziger Kosher Catering had opened the campus's first kosher restaurant, The CafÇ, in July 2003. When it closed on Sept. 26, 2004, Danziger declined to comment on the closure and issued a Sept. 22 press release stating that Danziger and the campus "have decided to amicably end the relationship ... and go in different directions and reallocate their resources."

Raymond Hirsh, former managing partner of Danziger, still lives in the Valley but declined to comment on the closure, citing a confidentiality agreement with the campus.

According to Rabbi David Rebibo, rabbinic administrator of the Vaad, which provided kosher supervision to The CafÇ, Danziger Kosher Catering no longer operates in the Valley, except for a Passover program through its Chicago headquarters.

Dad's Deli hours are 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. The deli is closed Saturday. Hours may change after Feb. 1.
