Obituaries

Herbert Block

Herbert Block of Scottsdale died Dec. 28, 2004. He was 86. He was born in Cedarhurst, N.Y., and moved to Arizona in 1979 from Merrick, N.Y. He was a retired executive vice president in the electronics industry and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of The Friar's Club and "SCORE."

Survivors include his wife, Ann, of Scottsdale; daughter, Cate Zager of Denver; sons, John of Weston, Conn., and Robert of Warsaw, Poland; sister, Claire Kramer of Scottsdale; and two grandchildren.

Services were held at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary.

Harriet S. Benton

Harriet S. Benton of Scottsdale died Jan. 2, 2005. She was 79. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to Arizona in 1977. She was a retired self-employed bookkeeper. She was also a volunteer at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Hospital.

Survivors include daughters Louise Klein and Jackie, both of Scottsdale; son, Robert of Parker, Colo.; brother, Gene Schwarz of Golden, Colo.; and four grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at Paradise Memorial Gardens, with Rabbi Alan Berlin officiating. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary.

Theda Kolker

Theda Kolker of Scottsdale died Dec. 30, 2004. She was 76. She was born in Bronx, N.Y., and moved to Arizona in 1991 from New Jersey. She was a retired secretary of a New Jersey college.

Survivors include her daughter, Mara Addison of Scottsdale; sister, Sandra Birnbaum of New York City; and three grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at Beth Israel Cemetery, with Cantor Howard Tabaknek officiating. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary.

John David Weil

John David Weil, 57, of Scottsdale, formerly of Highland Park, Illinois died December 28, 2004 after a courageous and valiant battle against cancer. Beloved husband of Marcie (Bornfriend), devoted and loving father to Jessica, Michael and Samantha. Son of Leslie and Carlyne (Strauss) Weil of Highland Park. Cherished brother and friend to Craig. Adored son-in-law of Hannah Bornfriend and revered brother-in-law of Shari Weil and Paul Bornfriend. Dear uncle to Lesley, Jamie and Jaclyn Weil.

John was born on September 28, 1947. He was awarded a BS in Economics from the University of Illinois in 1969, followed by an MBA in Finance from Northwestern University. Following a distinguished career as president and CEO of various companies, John was most recently Chief Executive Officer of Onstage Entertainment, as an operating affiliate with McCown De Leeuw and Company, LLC.

Johnny will be remembered by his friends and family for his remarkable sense of humor and devotion to his family. Hundreds of people who worked for and with him will remember John for his kindness, understanding and tireless work ethic. John will be greatly missed by all he touched.

Services were held Dec. 30 at Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary, 8555 E. Pinnacle Peak Road, Scottsdale. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014.



Paul Lewis Hochberg

Paul Lewis Hochberg We mourn the loss of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Paul Hochberg. He was born in New York City on January 5, 1917 and remained in New York (Queens) until he and his wife Anne moved to Scottsdale in 2001 to be closer to their family. Mr. Hochberg was a retired sales rep for his trunk and luggage company. He served in the U.S. Army Combat Engineers division during WWII as Staff Sergeant. His responsibilities included being cartographer and translator; he was part of the liberation of Dachau. He was devoted to his family and enjoyed his hobby of painting scenes in nature.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 63 years Anne; daughters Enid (Michael) Seiden and Davina Glaser; grandchildren Dorin (Randy) O'Hara, Joshua (Heather) Seiden, Emily Seiden and Seth Kromholz; and great-grandchildren Rachael and Hannah O'Hara and Samantha Seiden.

Funeral services were held Thursday, January 6th in Paradise Valley. Contributions in his memory are suggested to Amyloidosis Research Foundation, 4174 Meyers Avenue, Waterford, MI 48329 or Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.
