A decision about the fate of the Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center Senior Center is expected soon.

Mark Shore, JCC president, notified seniors at the senior center in September that the leased facility at 1805 W. Montebello Ave. would have to be vacated by the end of the year to make room for the Phoenix light rail project.

However, the notice has been extended until February, according to Adam Schwartz, executive vice president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix. The federation has been working closely with the JCC to find a new location for the senior center program.

"We're working very hard to resolve the last piece of the situation," Schwartz said. "We're getting real close."

One possibility is relocating the program to Beth El Congregation in Phoenix, which is about two miles from the Montebello site. "Discussions are ongoing," said Beth El president David Rosenbaum. "Hopefully our discussions will end with success."

Phone calls to Shore were not returned.
