Celebrate 350 opens with veterans' event

The Arizona Jewish Historical Society's Celebrate 350: Arizona committee will kick off its program of Celebrate 350 festivities with a Nov. 11 event to honor Jewish veterans.

Celebrate 350, a nationwide commemoration of 350 years of the Jewish presence in America, will be marked in the Valley with a variety of activities.

AJHS Executive Director Risa Mallin said although Celebrate 350 officially began this month, it makes sense to combine the official kick-off with the already scheduled veterans' event because of the contribution Jews have made to America through their military ser-vice.

Military service "was really some-thing that Jews were really serious about," Mallin explained. "Many got their citizenship by serving in the military, and many just were so pleased to be Americans that they wanted to do what they could for their country. So you find a large percentage of Jews in the military, larger than their percentage in the population."

Highlights of the event, to be held at the Cutler_Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center, include reading a pro-clamation from Gov. Janet Napolitano, speeches by local Jewish veterans and an exhibit featuring Arizona Jews' contributions to the military.

Mallin said the 350 cele-bration will continue for at least a year in the Valley. Several events are scheduled during 2004, including:
  • Arizona Jewish Theatre Company performance of "Dreams in the Golden Country," a play about the Jewish immigrant experience, Sunday, Nov. 21, at the Ina Levine Jewish Community Campus, 12701 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale

  • Jewish stamp lecture 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, at the Burton Barr Central Library

  • "Jewish History Through Coins" lecture 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, at the Cutler-Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center
Funding for lecturers comes from a $6,000 grant AJHS received in March from the Arizona Humanities Council.
