Obituaries

S. Kirk Kurlancheek

S. Kirk Kurlancheek of Sun Lakes died Oct. 8, 2004. He was 83. He was born in Carbondale, Pa., and moved to Arizona in 2000. He was a manager in the meat processing industry. He was served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

He was a past president of Bichor Cholem Congregation in Old Forge, Pa. He was a member of the Sun Lakes Jewish Congregation and served on its ritual committee. He was a member of the Jewish War Veterans.

Survivors include his daughters, Ena Brown of Tempe and Nan of Reading, Pa.; sister, Marion Elkins of Bal Harbour, Fla; and one grandchild.

Graveside services were held in Dalton, Pa. Arrangements were made by Regency Mortuary. A memorial service will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, at the Sun Lakes Chapel for All Faiths, 9240 E. Sun Lakes Blvd., Sun Lakes.



Ida J. Bloch

Ida J. Bloch of Phoenix died Oct. 15, 2004. She was 96. She was born in Little Rock, Ark., and moved to Arizona from Glencoe, Ill., in 1984. She was a member of Hadassah.

Survivors include her daughter, Ellen Edwards of Phoenix; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary.



Aronita Engel

Aronita Engel of Scottsdale died Oct. 18, 2004. She was 61. She was born in Sioux City, Iowa, and moved to Arizona in 1980. She was a homemaker. She was vice president of Temple Solel, past president of the Phoenix Chapter of Hadassah and past president of Temple Solel's Sisterhood.

Survivors include her husband, Mel; daughters, Sandy Robin of Boyd, Md., Gwen of Flagstaff, Jackie Siamon of Phoenix and Jodi of Phoenix; son, Brian of Phoenix; mother, Ruth Charnie of Scottsdale; sister, Harriet Tempchin of Brookville, Md.; and four grandchildren.

Services were held at Green Acres Cemetery. Arrange-ments were made by Sinai Mortuary.

Contributions are suggested to Temple Solel Preschool, 6805 E. McDonald Drive, Paradise Valley 85253; or to Hadassah, 7000 E. Shea Blvd., Suite 251, Scottsdale 85254.



Barbara Lila Cohen

Barbara Lila Cohen, 71, passed away October 18, 2004 in Scottsdale. Born in Cleveland, OH, she moved to Arizona 30 years ago. Barbara was a diverse businesswoman involved in several ventures over the years.

She is survived by her son David Stoller of Phoenix; daughters Betty (Rick) Potts of Nashville, TN, Gail Stoller and Lynnie Parkhurst of Phoenix, and Jayme (David) Silber of Israel; and grandchildren Samantha Potts, and Aryeh, Yaakov and Yehuda Silber.

Mom, your honesty, truthfulness and love was immeasurable. We love you, will miss you, and you will be in our hearts forever.

Services were held October 21 at Green Acres Cemetery in Scottsdale. Contributions in her memory are suggested to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.



Joan Horne

Joan Horne, 70, former Mayor Town of Paradise Valley, Arizona (1994-1996), died October 14, in Phoenix. Born January 17, 1934 in New York, she was the beloved wife of the late Elliot Horne. Survivors include her children: Gina Bernbaum (Paul), Michael Horne (Jan) and Karyn Klausner (Michael Carroll); sister Irene Young (Arthur) of New Jersey; mother-in-law Laura Schwartz; sister & brother-in-law Bob and Robyn Silverberg; grandchildren Jordan, Dylan, Marnie, Sophie and Ethan Bernbaum, Mackenzie, Alec and Eli Horne and Rachel Klausner.

One of the strongest and most courageous women ever, she overcame many serious health issues and was a 30-year survivor of breast cancer. Joan never let any of her illnesses stand in her way. She served her community in countless ways and affected numerous positive changes in the Town of Paradise Valley during her tenure on the Board of Adjustment, the Planning and Zoning Committee, the Town Council and her term as Mayor. At the time of her death she was the Chairperson of the Town of Paradise Valley Historical Society which recently celebrated the town's 40th anniversary. In addition, she was an active member in the Palo Verde Republican Women, Friends of the Scottsdale Library, Delta Kappa Gamma and Mountain Shadows Country Club. The family would like to thank the CICU unit nurses at St. Joseph's for their amazing care and their incredible bedside manner.

Funeral services have been held. Donations to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014.

Mabel E. Hymovitch

Mabel E. Hymovitch, formerly of Montreal, Canada, died on October 14, 2004. She was 75. She was born in Gaspe, Quebec, Canada, and moved to Montreal in 1945. She was a founding member of an Association to help children with learning difficulties (A.C.E.S.), and was past Matron of the Westmount Chapter (No. 9) of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Mabel was preceded in death by her beloved husband Eddie. Survivors include her sons, Joseph and Dr. Steven (Julie), her sister Greta Worden (Raymond) and brother Ross (Adele), as well as nieces and nephews. She was a very special Nana to Hannah, Hallie, David, and Stefanie.

Services were held at Sinai Mortuary with burial at Beth Israel Cemetery. Rabbi Stephen Kahn officiated.

Family requests any contributions be made to the caring people at Hospice of the Valley, 3238 N. 16th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85016. The family also wishes to extend a special thanks to the gentle and kind care of Dr. Michael Roberts and staff of Hematology and Oncology Associates.
