ADL recognizes KylsThe Anti-Defamation League will present Sen. Jon and Caryll Kyl with the 2004 Jerry J. Wisotsky Torch of Liberty Award on Oct. 28.The award was established "to recognize individuals who have exhibited extraordinary humanitarian concerns, and whose everyday actions exemplify the principles on which the ADL was founded." According to the ADL, the couple is being saluted "for their steadfast dedication to the values embodied in the award: diversity, civil harmony, social justice and respect for human dignity." Jon and Caryll Kyl met at Sunday school while both were studying at the University of Arizona in Tucson. After graduating from law school, Jon Kyl joined the Jennings, Strauss and Salmon firm in Phoenix. In 1984 he was elected chairman of the Phoenix Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. He was elected to Congress in 1986 and to the U.S. Senate in 1994. The second-term senator serves as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Terrorism and Homeland Security. Caryll Kyl earned her nursing degree at U of A. She's worked at St. Joseph's Hospitals in Phoenix and Tucson and at St. Luke's Hospital. In 1991, she joined Cindy McCain in co-founding the March of Dimes Gourmet Gala, which she took to Washington, D.C., turning it into a national event. She serves on the boards of Child Help USA and the U of A College of Nursing Advisory Board.
