What you can do

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. What can you do?
  1. Write a check. Programs such as Chrysalis' Project Chai depend on the generosity of individual donors. Patricia Klahr, Chrysalis executive director, says, "If we had more funds, we could reach a lot more people."

  2. Volunteer. Chrysalis has a variety of volunteer opportunities available, from assisting with children at one of its two centers to providing front office support. There are also one-time special or seasonal projects that individual organizations can provide. The three local JWI chapters, spearheaded by the Greater Phoenix group, are working on plans for providing a children's reading center at Chrysalis' Scottsdale center.

  3. Mentor. JFCS pairs abuse victims with local women who complete its mentoring training to provide needed one-on-one friendship and support.

  4. Contribute. Shelters are always in need of personal hygiene items, cleaning supplies and canned food. "Anything you use in your home we use times 50 over," says Lorie Stellmacher, who oversees volunteer services at Chrysalis. JWI Greater Phoenix chapter conducts periodic drives for supplies.

  5. Educate. Invite a representative from one of the shelters or agencies to speak at your congregation, at a Jewish communal organization or at your book group. "We want to educate," says Stellmacher.

  6. Donate old cell phones. Verizon collects discarded wireless phones and accessories from any carrier, then recycles, refurbishes or sells them to raise funds for domestic abuse victims. Proceeds provide programmatic grants to area domestic violence or law enforcement agencies or cell phones and airtime to victims. Donations may be made at any of Verizon's 37 retail outlets statewide, according to Verizon spokeswoman Jenny Weaver.
