Activities abound at Hadassah fashion show

The Mischpacha group of Hadassah Valley of the Sun is taking multi-tasking to a new level.
For their fourth annual children's fall fashion show fund-raiser on Sunday, Oct. 24, show organizer Gloria Rickerd has planned a variety of activities, including the show itself, an artwalk and silent auction. This is Rickerd's third year of coordinating the event, and "we've totally changed how we're doing it," she says.
The artwalk is a new addition to the event. On Sept. 12, children of Mischpacha members got together for an art day. Older children made clay handprints, while the younger ones decorated boxes and painted plates.
"Instead of taking the art projects home, they left them with us, for finishing and processing, and they will all reappear displayed in one of the rooms at the restaurant," Rickerd explains. "Then the parents, grandparents, etc., will all bid on them."
"The restaurant" is Calico Cow in Central Phoenix. "They are doing all the food, and because the restaurant itself is so beautiful, we don't even have to worry about decorating," Rickerd says. The previous two years, the fashion show was held at Temple Chai. Light refreshments and drinks will be served.
Clothing for the show, which features children up to preteen age, will be donated by Lila Metcalf of Just Kids, a local clothing store. Even children who are too young to walk can still make a splash; Rickerd says that many parents carry their babies and toddlers down the runway.
Rickerd notes with gratitude the efforts that Metcalf and Calico Cow owner Susan Greenhalgh, both non-Jews, have expended in order to help Hadassah support Jewish causes.
She says the interfaith effort "is really what we should all be striving for. We should all be part of the community and everybody should work together, and if something is a good cause, then it's a good cause regardless of religion.
"It's women helping other women, and the last couple years we've donated the bulk of our proceeds to the Woman and Child Center in Jerusalem."
The silent auction is another fund-raising component of the event. Rickerd says there will be many items up for bids, including restaurant and grocery store gift certificates, jewelry, a children's bouncer rental, a Cold Stone Creamery birthday cake and more.
Anyone in the community may attend and participate in the fashion show, and Rickerd says that the event is often the impetus that brings new members to the group.
"We have people who come to the fashion show and then join, and we have people who do not. And we both years that I have done it, we have had people whose children were in the show who were not Jewish," she notes. "It's people from the community supporting what they perceive to be a good cause and not having that religious barrier, which is wonderful."
The deadline to enter a child in the show is Friday, Oct. 15. Registration materials are available by contacting Rickerd at 602-787-1661 or by e-mailing gloriaanddavid@hotmail.com.
