Kosher cafe closes

Campus seeks new vendor

The Cafe on the Ina Levine Jewish Community Campus in Scottsdale shut its doors Sept. 26.

The kosher eatery's closure was by "mutual agreement" between Danziger Kosher Caterers of Arizona and the LLC (limited liability corporation) that owns the campus, according to Steve Kennedy, campus facility manager.

Campus officials are meeting with other kosher vendors to replace Danziger, Kennedy said. He expects the cafe to reopen in four to six weeks, he said.

Danziger Kosher Catering has operated the cafe since its opening on July 1, 2003, and has also supplied lunch to children at the Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center preschool and summer camps.

Until the cafe reopens, members of the JCC's parent-teacher group will prepare meals for the children in a small kitchen in the preschool, said Mark Shore, JCC CEO and president.

Ray Hirsh, managing partner of Danziger Kosher Caterers of Arizona, along with Gerhard Asanger and Stuart Morginstin, declined to comment on the closure, citing a "confidentiality" clause in a termination agreement between Danziger and the campus.

Hirsh did say, however, that Danziger has received "tons of calls from disappointed customers."

Danziger issued a press release Sept. 22 stating that "After substantial forethought and consideration, (Danziger and the campus) have decided to amicably end the relationship ... and go in different directions and reallocate their resources."
