Ruth BerkowitzRuth Berkowitz, 94, passed away September 15, 2004 in Phoenix, Arizona. Ruth was born on June 15, 1910 in Poland and came to the United States in 1920 with her mother, sisters, and grandmother to reunite with her father. She grew up in Newark, New Jersey and during WWII, joined the WACS, rising to the rank of Sergeant. She loved her time in the military and shared songs and stories of those days with her nieces, nephews and children. After leaving the military, Ruth met and married Herman Berkowitz. They moved to West Orange, New Jersey, where they bought a printing company, Sterling Press, and continued to operate it until Herman's retirement in 1978. They then moved to San Diego to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Ruth and Herman made many new and wonderful friends there and as in the past, their house became a gathering spot. They both enjoyed conversations, debates, stories, and telling jokes. In 2000, they moved to Phoenix and continued their many social activities. Ruth loved playing cards with her husband, reading books, talking politics, being with family, and "arguing" with her step-son Mort. The family would like to extend a special thanks to all of Ruth's caregivers at Hospice of the Valley-Gardiner Home, Grand Court, Connie's Care and Jackie Romiglio. A very special thank you to Mort and Geegee Berkowitz for their continued love and support. Ruth is survived by her husband of 55 years, Herman; daughter Zeena; son Perry and wife Andrea; her sons by marriage, Al and wife Nikki and Mort and wife Geegee; sisters, Florence Gluck and Lillian Woltman; grandchildren Adam, Madison, Molly, David, Cliff, Steven, Sheri, Rhonda and Scott; and great-grandchildren Tiana, Brian, Daniel, Shauna, and our new little Sara. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents Edith and Morris, sisters Mildred and Shirley, and daughter-in-law Vivian Berkowitz. Graveside services were held at Beth Israel Cemetery in Phoenix on September 20th, officiated by dear friend, Rabbi Harry Manhoff.
