Sukkot information

The eight-day festival of Sukkot, which celebrates the fall harvest, falls Sept. 30-Oct. 7 this year and families throughout the Valley will gather in their sukkot to share meals and celebrate the holiday. Some even sleep in their sukkah, a temporary structure similar to a hut. Several synagogues host community meals "under the stars" and in Chandler, one can even go on a sukkah-hopping tour. Below is a roundup of upcoming Sukkot events.

Sukkot for ASU students

The Hillel Jewish Student Center at Arizona State University will host a number of Sukkot activities.

Students can help build the campus sukkah 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, on Cady Mall.

Rabbi Barton Lee will host Sukkot dinners at his home Wednesday, Sept. 29, and Friday, Oct. 1. Hillel will host a hike in Oak Creek Canyon, leaving from Hillel at 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 3.

"Pizza in the Hut" will take place noon Monday, Oct. 4 in the campus sukkah. Cost is $1 per slice. A lunch in the sukkah will also be offered 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5. Cost is $3.50 students, $4.50 non-students.

Students will make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the homeless 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, in the campus sukkah.

YLD decorates sukkah for seniors at Kivel

The Young Leadership Division of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix will decorate a sukkah 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, at the Kivel Campus of Care, 3020 N. 36th St., Phoenix.

Participants may bring new decorations, from plastic fruit and flowers to children's artwork. Palm fronds are also needed.

The community service project is open to young professionals, ages 22-45, and their children.

'Soupa in the sukkah'

"Soupa in the Sukkah" will be held 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, at Congregation Gan Shalom, 3916 E. Para-dise Lane, Phoenix.

The meal of vegetable soup, salads and sandwiches, will be followed by a "Sukkot service under the stars" at 6:30 p.m.

Cost is $3 per person, $10 per family. Bring a blanket and flashlight for the service.

The synagogue will host "Pizza in the Hut" noon Sunday, Oct. 3. Cost is $3 per person, $10 per family. "Sukkayaki in the Sukkah" will be held 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6. Cost is $4 per person, $12 family.

Gan Elohim service

Temple Gan Elohim will celebrate Sukkot at a Shabbat service that will also consecrate its religious school 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at Mission Bell United Metho-dist Church, 4645 W. Bell Road, Glendale.

Rabbi Maynard Bell, rabbi emeritus of Temple Solel, will lead the service.

Families are welcome to have their own picnic supper in the synagogue's sukkah during the week of Sukkot. Call Stephanie, 623-210-7435 or e-mail webmaster@templeganelohim.org to reserve a time slot.

Havurat Emet service

Congregants will bring fruit, vegetables and palm branches to decorate the sukkah at Temple Havurat Emet 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at the Navajo Room in the Sun Lakes Country Club, 25601 N. Sun Lakes Blvd.

The Sukkot/Shabbat ser-vice will be followed by an oneg.

All the fruit and vegetables will be donated to a Chandler food bank.

Sukkah-hopping tour

Chabad of the East Valley will host its sixth annual sukkah-hopping tour begin-ning at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, at the Chabad Center for Jewish Life, 3855 W. Ray Road, Chandler.

The free tour will visit five Sukkot in the East Valley area and includes kosher food, arts projects, singing, dancing and a talent show.

Kol Ami under the stars

Temple Kol Ami will host a "Sukkot Under the Stars" with Rabbi Jordan E. Goldson 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, at the synagogue, 15030 N. 64th St., Scottsdale.

The outdoor service will be held on the lawn and followed by a picnic dinner, available for purchase for $5. To attend, call 480-951-9660, ext. 200.

Family fun day at park

Shirat-David Synagogue will have a family fun day at the park noon-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, at McCormick-Still-man Railroad Park, Indian Bend and Scottsdale roads, Scottsdale. The event in-cludes activities, crafts projects and music. Food will be available for a small fee. A temporary sukkah will be built at the park for this event. Call 602-944-7622.

JCC sukkah-decorating

A sukkah-decorating party for families will be held 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, in the playground of the Early Childhood Center at the Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center, 12701 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale.

New Shul sukkah party

The New Shul will host a family sukkah-building party 10 a.m.-noon Sunday, Sept. 26, at the synagogue, 14425 N. Scottsdale Road, Suites 100-200, Scottsdale.

An ice cream kiddush in the sukkah will follow.

Teen barbecue party

The Chabad Mishmar teen program will host a Sukkot barbecue 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at a private home in Phoenix. The program, open to high school students, will include entertainment and prizes. Call Rabbi Laibel Blotner, 602-944-2753 or 602-674-0067.

True joy of Sukkot

"Sukkot: True Joy" is the topic of a discussion 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, at Aish Hatorah Scottsdale, 14435 N. Scottsdale Road, Suite 100.

Temple Beth Sholom will have a Sukkot family dinner and service in the sukkah 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, at the synagogue, 3400 N. Dobson Road, Chandler.

Congregation Or Chadash will hold its third annual "Sukkot Under the Stars" 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, at a private home in Scottsdale. The evening will feature games, activities and food.

Har Zion Congregation will have a dinner under the stars 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, at the synagogue, 6140 E. Thunder-bird Road, Scottsdale.
