ObituariesRuth AxelRuth Axel of Tempe died Sept. 8, 2004. She was 92. She was born in Russia and moved to Arizona from Wisconsin in 1946. She was a homemaker.Survivors include her son, Sherman of Tempe; and two grandchildren. Services were held at Green Acres Cemetery, with Rabbi Barton Lee officiating. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Alzheimer's Association, 1028 E. McDowell Road, Phoenix 85006. Marshall A. CohenMarshall "Butch" A. Cohen of Peoria died Sept. 10, 2004. He was 63. He was born in Buffalo, N.Y., and moved to Arizona in 1972. He was a designer of customer draperies. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.Survivors include his wife, Marilynn; daughter, Nicole Keagle of Glendale; son, Steven of Mesa; mother, Estelle of Phoenix; and four grandchildren. Services were held at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix 85014. Barbara KahnBarbara Kahn Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister peacefully passed away at her home on September 10, 2004. Barbara was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 23, 1935 and lived in Cleveland throughout her childhood. She graduated from Ohio State University where she earned a degree in education.Although Barbara and her future husband Arnold's sisters were best friends for years, Barbara and Arnie didn't meet until attending a family gathering in Cleveland in 1955. The next day they had their first date and were inseparable thereafter. They were married on December 23, 1956. In 1959 they moved to Phoenix where Barbara taught elementary school. After a brief move to California while Arnie completed his residency, they returned to Phoenix. Barbara loved the life she lived in Phoenix. Barbara devoted much of her time alongside her husband raising their three daughters. Barbara's active involvement in numerous charitable and service organizations included an exceptional commitment to the Arizona Kidney Foundation. She also contributed many hours in her children's classrooms. Barbara enjoyed painting, skiing, traveling and gardening. She was a talented artist whose interest took her to the great museums of the world, and to study at Christ Church at Oxford University. Barbara cherished her family and friends and was equally cherished by them. Barbara's loving care and joy in those she considered family was remarkable. Her compassionate nature knew no bounds and was felt by all those she encountered. She will always be remembered for her eternal optimism, cheerful smile, and warm embrace. Her bright, loving spirit was a beacon that drew people to her. Barbara was an impeccable model of dignity, grace and courage. By her example, she taught us to be true to our values and never give up. Barbara passed away with the same calm and dignified demeanor that described her life and her treatment of others. Barbara will be lovingly remembered by all who knew her. She will be always in our hearts. Barbara is survived by her husband Dr. Arnold Kahn, her daughters Beth Kahn, Jill Roberts and Karen Handelman, their husbands, her grandchildren Stephanie, Steven and Maya, her sister Vicki Stern, extended family and countless friends. Alvin SchlossmanAlvin Schlossman of Scottsdale, former resident of Sun City West, Arizona died on September 8, 2004. He was 86 years old.Born in Russia, he came to the United States with his parents when he was 2 years old. He moved to Arizona 17 years ago from Silver Spring, Maryland. He was a retired Federal personnel officer for the United States Information Agency and was awarded the Distinguished Honor Award by the USIA in 1975. Alvin was a member and officer of the Men's Club of Beth Emeth Congregation in Sun City West. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Evelyn, and is survived by his children; Maury (Sonya) of Houston, Texas; Robin (Howard) Schlossman Asaki of Scottsdale; and Jenni (Jeff) Schlossman of Omaha, NE; and his 6 grandchildren. Mort was born in Newark, New Jersey on January 2, 1923 and moved to Phoenix from Chicago in 1972. He was a retired physical therapist and a member of Temple Beth Israel and the Jewish War Veterans. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geri. Mort is survived by three children; Bob (Lori) of Paradise Valley, Ed (Wendy) of Bozeman, Montana and Lori (Gary) Pearlmutter of Flagstaff and eight grandchildren.Contributions in his memory can be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O.
