JCC gets new name
LEISAH NAMM
Managing Editor

Jews in the East Valley now have a community center with a name that accurately reflects the area they live in.
The Tri-City Jewish Community Center's board of managers voted Sept. 7 to change the name to the East Valley Jewish Community Center.
The JCC plans to launch a capital campaign drive with the goal of building a permanent home, said Ilene Blau, executive director. "We're pursuing a permanent location," she said.
After nearly 17 years at a site leased from the Tempe School District, the JCC moved to its current site, a former charter school, at 1515 S. Indian Bend, in July 2002.
The Tri-City JCC took its name in 1983 from the geographic area it served: Mesa, Tempe and Chandler. That area since has expanded to include Ahwatukee, Apache Junction, Gilbert and Queen Creek. The organization's original name was JOT (Jewish Organization of Tempe).
The JCC offers a preschool and kindergarten, accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and a day school for grades first-sixth. It also offers infant and toddler care, summer day camp, youth clubs, vacation camps, senior programming, community holiday celebrations, and adult and family recreational, social and educational programs.
Ilan Baldinger designed the JCC's new logo. Baldinger, an architect, is working with the JCC on a concept for a new building. His wife, Hadassah, has been teaching in the JCC's preschool for more than 30 years and also teaches Hebrew at the JCC day school.
