Preparing for Days of Awe

In preparation for the "Days of Awe" of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, Selichot, prayers of forgiveness, are recited daily beginning at midnight on the Saturday before Rosh Hashana. On the following days, up until Yom Kippur, the Selichot prayers are customarily recited before the daily morning service. Sephardim recite Selichot during the entire month of Elul until Rosh Hashana.

For a sample of the service, the Milken Archive of American Jewish Music newly released "The First S'lihot," features Cantor Benzion Miller and the Schola Hebaeica performing the entire midnight service according to Orthodox and traditional ritual.

This year, the first Selichot service is held on Saturday, Sept. 11. Following are a list of several local services.
