Phyllis Shapiro, age 72, passed away peacefully Friday, June 18, 2004, surrounded by family and friends after a courageous three-year fight with ovarian cancer.

Mrs. Shapiro, born in the Bronx, New York, on October 8, 1931, moved to Phoenix in 1954, where her husband, Irwin, opened one of the first podiatry offices in Phoenix. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, artist, and gourmet cook. She served her community in many ways including as a Temple volunteer, Temple Sisterhood president and President of the Western Federation of Temple Sisterhoods. Always a dedicated teacher, during her 22 years in the Washington school district she inspired students to be the best they could be. She was the warmest, kindest friend. She always lent an ear, always made sure others had what they needed.

She leaves behind her husband of 50 years, Irwin; children Neal (Fay), Nina (Michael) and Sheri (Jon); grandchildren Aryeh, Chaim, Chananya, Jack and Sutter; brother Larry (Shirley) Garelik; sister Blanche (Reuben) Rosloff; numerous nieces and nephews; and so many friends.
