ObituariesMaurice A. PragMaurice A. Prag of Scottsdale died June 22, 2004. He was 87. He was born in Chicago and moved to Arizona in 1993. He was a certified dental technician and jeweler. He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served in World War II.Survivors include his wife, Elaine; daughter, Laurel of Phoenix; and son, Jeffrey of Stockton, Calif. Services are being held 9:30 a.m. today (Friday, June 25) at Green Acres Cemetery, with Rabbi Mark Bisman officiating. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Phyllis GilleryPhyllis Gillery, age 66, of Scottsdale (formerly of Columbus, Ohio), passed away June 17, 2004 in Scottsdale. Mrs. Gillery, a homemaker, was born March 12, 1938 on Long Island, New York and made Arizona her home seven years ago. She was the past president of Women's American ORT; she also enjoyed golf and was a member of Temple Beth Israel.She is survived by her husband, Robert Gillery of Scottsdale; daughters, Pamela Meyer of Scottsdale, Sheri Scaglione of Columbus, Ohio; and grandchildren, Katie Meyer, Nick Meyer, Victoria Meyer, Jackson Scaglione and Alexandra Scaglione. Funeral services have been held. Green Acres Mortuary and Cemetery is entrusted with the arrangements. Anne F. SchubertAnne F. Schubert, age 100, died June 19, 2004. She had been a resident of Phoenix since 1951 and lived a full, active and rewarding life.She is survived by her sons, Gordon (Jerri) of Scottsdale and S. Roy (Lynn) of Hermosa Beach, Calif., and son-in-law Ira Morton of Phoenix. She also is survived by grandchildren Mark (Mary) Schubert of Phoenix, Debra (Steve) Gelbart of Phoenix, Lori (Mack) Bandler of Medford, Ore., Dirk (Pam) Schubert of Ojai, Calif., Joel Morton of Aspen, Colo., Julie Lynn of Scottsdale, Gwen (Albert) Grabb of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., Jonathan Schubert of Tempe, Ariz., Robert (Cathie) Schubert of Hawthorne, Calif., and 13 great-grandchildren. Anne was preceded in death by her husband, Robert (1968), and her daughter, Beryl Morton (2002). Anne was born in Russia to Bella and Nathan Maltz and emigrated to Chicago with her family when she was just six years old. She had two brothers and two sisters, all of whom preceded her in death. She was a bookkeeper in her young adult life and after she and Robert moved to Phoenix and established the Schubert Liquor Company in 1951, she helped manage the financial records of the business. They joined Beth El Congregation the same year and Anne remained a member of the synagogue until her death. She was president of Beth El's sisterhood in the 1960s and in that time period she also became the synagogue's first female board member and chaired a benefit that brought entertainer Jack Benny to the Valley for a performance at what is now the Celebrity Theater. The event raised thousands of dollars for Beth El's building fund. Over the years, she herself donated generously to Beth El and other Jewish organizations. She also was a decades-long member of Hadassah. She imparted to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren the values of fairness, justice, generosity, courage, integrity and tenacity. She was the matriarch of a large and loving family and inspired in all of us a commitment to live a life of good deeds and a determination to stay connected to each other. We will all miss her indomitable spirit. Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 27th at 1:00 p.m. in Sinai Mortuary Chapel, 4538 N. 16th St. in Phoenix.
