Miracle Mile opens in Southern California

Where - and when - did a former bank building become the destination of choice for bagels, brisket and homemade bread pudding?

When, just about a year ago, George and Jill Garcia opened a branch of the popular Valley-based Miracle Mile Delicatessens in the heart of Coronado, Calif.

The couple, daughter and son-in-law of the late Jack Grodzinsky, who founded the Phoenix eatery more than 50 years ago, currently own and operate delis here at Arrowhead Towne Center and Camelback Colonnade.

They purchased a condo in Coronado in 1992 as "the ideal escape from Phoenix summers - although we never were able to spend enough time there," Jill says.

But one day, on a serendipitous stroll along the island's main street, George spotted what he thought would be an ideal location for a restaurant.

"I pointed out to him that it was a bank building," Jill laughs.

Others seemed to have the same view, however, and within a short time frame, the site became available and Boston Market, and then an Italian restaurant, moved in. One night the Garcias were eating there and during the course of conversation they learned that the owner was selling. George says, "We jumped at the opportunity."

Miracle Mile in Coronado, at 980 Orange Ave., is open daily from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. The menu is "basically the same" as in Phoenix, the Garcias report, and during the summer months they are there as much as possible to oversee the operation and enjoy the lifestyle.

"We depend on the locals to survive the winter," Jill says, "but last season, business was spectacular."

Customers especially appreciate the streamlined service that enables them to get back as quickly as possible to the sand and surf.
