King David students show off art education

The King David School art specialist Barbara Becker kept every piece of art her students created throughout the year. There was so much of it that she had to borrow her friend's garage for storage. She then painstakingly went through every creation and put together a presen- tation of each student's artwork - including paint-ings, drawings, weaving, ceramics and stained glass - to display at the school's Art Walk and Musical Evening.
"It was a lot of work, but it's worth it," she says. "It was so lovely. The kids forget what they've done at the beginning of the year and if you send (the art) home, the parents don't know where to keep it."
Along with Becker's col-lection of student art, music specialist Anne Grabois put together a musical review titled "Inventions Rock!" that featured each grade level doing a rock-and-roll style musical performance about a different inventor or invention, including Thomas Edison, computers, the wheel, the train and radio and television.
"What was great about it was we learned about inventions and inventors and how they affected society and while we were learning about it we were singing about it and enjoying it," she says. "That's what I try to do - I try to combine regular studies plus music."
Grabois also featured the invention of the piano and students who take private piano lessons performed between musical numbers.
"I like to bring kids out of their shells and encourage the performing arts," says Grabois, who teaches private piano and voice lessons in addition to her role at King David.
At the end of the evening each family had the opportunity to "buy" their child's art for a donation of $18 to the art department, which will be used for art supplies and special project materials. While every child received their art collection at the end of the evening with or without a donation, Becker says the donations generated $1,200 this year.
Grabois says she received excellent feedback from the parents, who she says tell her every year that she's outdone what she did the previous year.
"It's very rewarding for both Ann and I," says Becker. "We get to show off what we've done all year."
