Obituaries

Esther Unz

Esther Unz of Glendale died May 25, 2004. She was 67. She was born in Los Angeles and moved to Arizona from California in 1991. She was a teacher.

Survivors include her son Ron of Palo Alto, Calif.; and sister, Rivko Knox of Phoenix.

Services were held in Los Angeles. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary.



Jonathan Jay Blitz

Jonathan Jay Blitz of Scottsdale died May 26, 2004. He was 43. He was born in Washington, D.C., and moved to Arizona from Maryland in 1996. He was a homebuilder.

Survivors include his wife Robin; sons, Aaron and Samuel; parents, Marjorie and Sheldon of San Diego, Calif.; and sisters, Ingrid Quinn of Scottsdale and Elizabeth Luciano of Temecula, Calif.

Services were held at Paradise Memorial Gardens with Rabbi Stephen Kahn officiating. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary.

Stanley A. Glassman

Stanley A. Glassman of Scottsdale died May 31, 2004. He was 66. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to Arizona from New York in 1993. He was a retired proofreader.

Survivors include his wife, Sheila; and son, Dave.

Services were held at Paradise Memorial Gardens, with Rabbi Irwin Wiener officiating. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary.

Betty Bachner

Betty Bachner, born in New York City, New York, passed away at home surrounded by her family on Monday, May 31, 2004. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jerome, of 62 years; son, Ronald; three brothers, David, Marty and Harold; as well as niece, Rhonda Lowy.

Betty was the loving mother of son Steve and his wife Rhonda, and daughter-in-law, Bonnie. She was the sister to Toby and her husband Gene and sister-in-law, Judy. She loved and adored her seven grandchildren and great-grandson. Her nephews, Jeff, Andy and Jared; nieces, Jenna and Marissa; as well as several other family members also survive her. Betty lived a full life, enjoying her family and many wonderful friends. She will indeed be missed by all who knew and loved her. She will forever touch our lives.

Services were held in Valhalla, N.Y. today, Friday, June 4, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. In her memory, contributions are to be made either to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014; or NA'AMAT USA, Rina Chapter, c/o Yellin, 15835 N. 6th Dr., Phoenix, AZ 85023.



Sheldon Levine

Sheldon Levine, age 66, of Anthem, passed away Friday, May 28, 2004 after a valiant battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Mary; son Steve (Tori) of Irving, Texas; daughters Sharri Boyett of San Marcos, Texas, and Tamara Levine of Houston; step-daughter Julie Melson of Phoenix; two grandsons and one granddaughter; and brothers Allen (Marlene) of El Paso, Texas, Seymour (Marjorie) of Marietta, Ga., and Neil (Laurie) of Cherry Hill, N.J.

In 1958 he graduated from New York City Community College with an associates degree in electrical engineering. Sheldon worked as a telemetry designer on the Saturn Project and then moved to Houston, where he worked on several Apollo Space Missions. He returned to Phoenix 26 years ago from Pennsylvania. Most recently he was a consultant employed as a Certified Software Test Engineer. He enjoyed hunting and working on his cabin in northern Arizona. Sheldon will be buried in Huntsville, Ala.

A memorial service will be held at Temple Chai, 4645 E. Marilyn Rd., Phoenix, Arizona 85032, Sunday, June 6, 2004 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, or Temple Chai. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.



Edith Platt

Edith Platt, age 83, passed away May 29, 2004 in Phoenix. She was born in Montreal, Canada and moved to the Valley 40 years ago from Washington, D.C.

Survivors include her sons Harvey (Lydia) Platt and Eric (Genevieve) Platt; sister Beryl Weitzman; brother Alvin (Sylvia) Silver; grandchildren Laurel (Daniel) Amaya, Kymberley Tuvim and Bryan, Karen & Danielle Platt; and great-grandchild Marisa Amaya.

She was preceded in death by her late husband David J. Platt, and her late daughter Frances Tuvim.

Funeral services and interment were held Sunday, May 30th in Phoenix. Contributions in her memory are suggested to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 2990 E. Northern Ave., Suite #E-100, Phoenix, AZ 85028. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.



Henry Jonathan Roth

Henry Jonathan Roth, age 86, of Sun Lakes, passed away May 27, 2004. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and was a graduate of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and of NYU Law School. He served in the US Army Medical Corp. in WWII. Henry, a specialist in food packaging and plastics, was associated with W.R. Grace & Co. for many years.

He was preceded in death by his former wife Aileen Mariam Roth, who passed away in 1986; and is survived by his wife Grace Goldstein Roth; his daughters Stacy Roth Bachrach of Rocky Hill, N.J., and Robin Roth Bengochea of Miami; his step-son David Barry Goldstein of Phoenix; and grandchildren Adam, Eric, Brandon, Gideon, Noah, and Melba. He gave years of service to his synagogue and was an avid hiker and swimmer.

Memorial services were held Sunday, May 30th in Sun Lakes. Graveside funeral services were held on Monday, May 31st in Mt. Nebo Cemetery, Aurora, Colo. Donations may be sent to the National Parkinson's Foundation, 1501 N.W. 9th Ave., Miami, FL 33136. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.
