The need to march for reproductive freedom

Editor:
Women's rights are all about the freedom of choice that our gender has fought so hard to win and express. I control, but not too well, my outrage at the letter from a reader who would have us believe that there is a parallel in the genocide of six million Jews and the choice of abortion ("'Reproductive freedom' is absurd," Jewish News, May 7). As the current generation would say, this woman "just doesn't get it." Women rally for choice because, until Roe vs. Wade, abortions were performed in disgraceful hotel rooms, rural towns and foreign countries, usually by non-licensed practitioners.

There is abundant information regarding birth control contraceptives to convey that none of these claim 100 percent effectiveness, including her reference to condoms.

The solution is not condoms, but having the courage to support the fact that women are not chattel. We, as women, are deeply concerned that the Roe vs. Wade ruling could be overturned with the addition of one more anti-choice justice to the Supreme Court. Thus, we march.

Editor:
Please do not condemn women who march for reproductive choice until you have walked in their shoes ("'Reproductive freedom' is absurd," Jewish News, May 7). Women don't trip lightly into the abortion clinic. It takes much pain and heartache to make the choice.

Women suffered a great deal until Roe vs. Wade was legal. Do not be so quick to throw away abortion rights and reproductive freedom.
