During his three years in the Valley, Cantor Marc Philippe has made a lot of music.

From the creation of the Judaic Cultural Orchestra, which performed Jewish music and benefited local Jewish organizations, to participation in the Sephardic Community of Arizona's Sephardic concerts and numerous cantor and holiday concerts, Philippe added a long list of musical offerings to the Valley's Jewish community.

He arrived at Beth El Congregation in November 2001 and, at the end of this month, he will move El Paso, Texas, to become the cantor and education director at B'nai Zion.

He will be honored at the finale of this year's Raw Kaballah season 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 21, at Beth El Congregation, 1118 W. Glendale Ave., Phoenix.

Beth El will also honor Philippe at Shabbat services 9 a.m. Saturday, May 22.

At Beth El, Philippe created Beit Ahava, a monthly musical Saturday morning service, and directed Beth El's Talmud Torah Stars - religious school students - in the production of a compact disc of Jewish music.

He was also Beth El's Talmud Torah director and under his direction, the school was recognized as a "Framework for Excellence School" by the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism in 2002.

Philippe will leave Beth El at the end of the month and begin at B'nai Zion in July.

Philippe said he will miss his congregants and the fellow clergy and cantors, and plans to return to perform in future concerts. "It's a great, great community," he said. "In the three years I've been here, it's feels like I've been here so much longer."

Rabbi Barb Moscow of Connecticut has been hired as education director and will begin July 1, said Jeffrey Frankel, synagogue administrator. Hazzan sheni Sam Goldman, who has been with the congregation for several years, will serve as cantor for weekly services.
