Threatening symbols

Editor:
A story in last week's Jewish News ("Cross-burning bill in danger," Jewish News, May 14) stated: "There is no symbol 'more charged with threat and hate' than a burning cross, not even a swastika, said Straus. 'Cross burning is an American form of intimidation.'"

I did not make the statement regarding swastikas. What I did say was that there is no American symbol more threatening and charged with hate than a burning cross. I then made the point that a swastika, which I obviously consider one of the most hateful, threatening symbols in the history of the world, is really not an American symbol, whereas a burning cross is.

I would not want anyone to think that I would minimize or trivialize the hateful, threatening impact of the swastika.
