YLD looks to leaders for their secrets of success

America was recently captivated by 16 young professionals vying to work for Donald Trump in "The Apprentice." In response to the popularity of the show, the Young Leadership Division of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix is holding an event, "The Sweet Taste of Success," with a panel of local leaders.

"'The Apprentice' has inspired so many nationally with Donald Trump as the mentor, we decided to get to know our own local mentors," says Barbra Schwartz, who is co-chairing the event with Aaron Gordon. "We chose 'The Sweet Taste of Success' as a way to get the young leadership community in touch with the successful leaders in our very own Jewish community."

Panelists are Steven J. Hilton, Carrie Martz and Laurence Gilman. Moderator is Adam Goodman of Goodman Furnishings.

"All of the speakers have some sort of philanthropic history, from donating to the Jewish Federation Annual Campaign to creating and spearheading successful fund-raisers," says Schwartz. "We wanted the young leaders to see these leaders and hear their stories to get inspired and realize that success is attainable."

Hilton founded Monterey Homes in 1985 and led the company to merge with Legacy Homes in 1997. Now called Meritage Corporation, Hilton serves as co-chairman and chief executive officer.

Martz is the founder of The Martz Agency, an advertising agency she's run since 1980, and a public relations company, Martz Public Relations.

Gilman is vice president and assistant general manager of the Phoenix Coyotes. He's worked with the team for 10 years, previously serving as director of hockey operations.
About 150-200 people are expected to attend the first-time event.

"We have a lot of people in the community who could teach and inspire us," says Schwartz. "We are hoping that this event will strike a nerve and really hit home to the young leaders in the community."
