Obituaries

Albert I. Firestein

Albert I. Firestein, age 87, passed away May 4, 2004 in Phoenix. He was born in Scranton, Pa. and has been a resident of the Valley since 1941. He was a graduate of the University of Southern California Law School, Class of 1939 and a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps. For over 20 years, Al owned and operated Albert's Jewelry in Phoenix and later returned to law and practiced in Phoenix for 13 years. He then served for seven years as a Superior Court Judge Pro Tem.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years Frances Meckler Firestein; a son Charles (Kathy) Firestein; daughter Sandra (Jim) Garvey; brother Mike Loring; grandchildren Kim (Steve) Westfall, Jason (Elizabeth) Garvey, Jonathan Firestein, Jeffrey Firestein, Christopher Brock and Sean Garvey; and great-grandchildren Emily and Annie Westfall, Parker Firestein and Owen Garvey.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 7th at Beth El Cemetery, 2300 W. Van Buren St., Phoenix. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory are requested to the Sylvia Plotkin Judaica Museum, c/o Temple Beth Israel, 10460 N. 56th St., Scottsdale, AZ 85253; or Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary of Arizona.



Barney Shanks

Barney Shanks, age 85, passed away April 30, 2004 at home in Phoenix. He moved to the Valley 60 years ago from his native Detroit. Barney was the business manager and owner of Sun Valley Bakery for 10 years in Phoenix. He later was the managing agent for Health Benefit Association in Phoenix for 20 years. He was also a member of Temple Beth Israel for 50 years.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Lillian; daughters Gayle (Clive Sommer) Shanks, Laurie (Terence Kindlon) Shanks, Vicki (Lewis) Miles, Judy (James Gracer) Shanks and Alane (Jeremy Solomons) Shanks; brother Arthur (Jackie) Shanks; grandchildren Lisa Merrin, Michael Sommer, Jacob and Benjamin Kindlon, Jeremy and Adam Miles, Talia and Mira Gracer, and Eli and Jared Shanks; and great-grandchild Samuel Williams. Barney will always be remembered for his fighting spirit, even in his later years when faced with many illnesses. He was a patriarch of a large and loving family, the light of his life.

Funeral services were held May 2nd in Beth Israel Cemetery in Phoenix. Eva R. Shaw

Eva R. Shaw, age 89, of Scottsdale, died April 29, 2004. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Phyllis and Herbert Waze of Scottsdale; son and daughter-in-law Jerome and Riki Shaw of West Bloomfield, Mich.; grandchildren Nechemia (Devorah) Blavin, Paul (Amy) Blavin, Victoria (Luc) Faucheaux, and Monet (Matt) Mindell; and great-grandchildren Leo, Lilly, Jullian, Camille, Yisroel, Shana and Aaron. She was the beloved wife of the late Louis Shaw.
