Kivel gets $3.5 million for assisted living

Kivel Campus of Care has received a $3.54 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to convert 30 independent living apartments into assisted living units, which will make Kivel the only kosher assisted-living facility in the Valley.

The grant will cover the cost of bringing the apartments up to the required code for assisted-living facilities, and upgrading and modernizing the dining room and common areas, said Ira Shulman, Kivel CEO. The grant will not pay for assisted living services; those will be paid for either from Arizona Long Term Care System (ALTCS) or private pay, Shulman said.

The 30 units are currently occupied, and the residents will be relocated to other apartments on the campus, he said. The renovation is expected to take approximately 20 months.

Applicants must meet HUD guidelines, which are based on income, and qualify through an assisted-living evaluation - a measure of a person's activity daily living skills -which determines what level of care they need, Shulman said.

Assisted-living facilities are designed to accommodate the frail elderly and people with disabilities who live independently but need assistance with daily living activities such as eating, bathing, grooming and home management.

Kivel, located at 3020 N. 36th St. in Phoenix, operates a 191-bed skilled care facility, including a secured Alzheimer's care unit, and 256 HUD-subsidized independent living apartments. The grant will allow Kivel to expand its services to include assisted living.

"Receipt of this grant, which is the largest of its kind awarded to any facility this year, underscores the reputation Kivel has earned for providing quality care for the frail elderly in our community," stated Kivel board president Kenneth I. Feldman in a press release.

"It is a testament to the work of the administration and dedicated staff that Kivel was selected."
