Temple Beth Israel hires new rabbi'

Temple Beth Israel has hired a new assistant rabbi who will begin at the Scottsdale Reform congregation on Aug. 15.

Rabbi Jessica D. Zimmerman graduated with a bachelor's degree in art history from Columbia University in 1995 and was ordained as a rabbi from the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion in New York in 2003. She most recently served as the Marshal T. Meyer Rabbinic Fellow at Congregation B'nai Jeshurn in New York City, a congregation of about 2,000 families.

Zimmerman formerly worked as a rabbinic intern in summer 2001 with Temple Beth Israel's Rabbi Stephen Kahn when he served at Sherith Israel in San Francisco. She has also worked as a rabbinic intern at the Community Synagogue in Port Washington, N.Y.; held High Holy Day student pulpits in San Jose, Costa Rica and Bombay, India; and was a student rabbi in Juneau, Alaska and Rocky Mount, N.C.

Kahn became senior rabbi of the congregation July 2003. Rabbi Erica Burech joined the TBI staff in August 2002. She serves as the temple's director of religious education.
