Chabad to expand to North Valley
LEISAH NAMM
Managing Editor

Chabad of Arizona has hired a Phoenix native to serve as a Chabad rabbi for the North Phoenix area.
Rabbi Mendy Levertov, son of Rabbi Zalman and Tzipi Levertov, who founded Chabad of Arizona 27 years ago, will begin programming for Chabad of North Phoenix after Passover. Initially, he and his wife Leah will offer classes in private homes. "As more people get involved, the synagogue will happen by itself," he said.
Chabad of North Phoenix will also serve Jews in Cave Creek and Carefree neighborhoods.
Levertov grew up in Phoenix and attended yeshiva in New York and then London. While living in London, he followed Phoenix Jewish life by logging in weekly to the Jewish News Web site, he said. "(I) always considered this home."
In addition to teaching classes in the North Phoenix area, Levertov will work with his father to develop new outreach programs for Chabad of Arizona. He recently worked with Chabad's model matzo bakery in Phoenix.
Other Chabad centers are in Chandler, Glendale, Central Phoenix, Scottsdale and at Arizona State University. Rabbi Yossi Levertov of Chabad of Scottsdale is Rabbi Mendy Levertov's uncle. Call 480-563-4898.
