Federation adopts public policy process

The board of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix recently approved a process by which federation can review public policy issues in order to take a position.

A position may be adopted when an issue impacts the Jewish community, and may range from Israel issues to legislation to funding for agencies in the Jewish community. The adoption of a position may lead to action on legislation, public media statements or education for the community.

The review of public policy issues will begin at the committee level of the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), the public affairs arm of the federation. Once a consensus has been reached at the committee level, the recommendations will go to the federation board for approval.

"We felt that for us to do this and do it effectively, we needed to have the process in place," says Cathy Wolf, JCRC director. "We needed to make sure we were involving the different groups in the community and that as a department of the federation we were taking it through the appropriate channels because we do represent the federation."

Currently an ad hoc committee is considering issues relating to immigration, a process that has included guest speakers about the topic at a recent JCRC board meeting.
