Bureau of Jewish Education presents 'Jewish Lessons to Grow By'

The Bureau of Jewish Education is devoting an entire day to Jewish parenting.

Feb. 29 has been designated Jewish Parenting Day by the BJE. The main events of the day will be a series of workshops "Jewish Lessons to Grow By: Turning Your Child Into a Mensch" with Joel Lurie Grishaver, a renowned Jewish educator.

Linda Feldman, family education coordinator for the BJE, put together the program and successfully applied for a grant from the Jewish Community Foundation.

"As parents we're always faced with so many challenges," says Feldman. "We would like to be able to help parents find new paths in raising children with an understanding of how Judaism ... can help us as parents."

Feldman says she organized the event so parents with children of all ages could participate. The four sessions with Grishaver include one for parents, one for teachers and two for parents with children. Workshops are:
  • 10 a.m.-noon: "Four Steps to Menschlikeit," for parents only, will focus on how to help young children become caring, loving and responsible in a Jewish context.

  • 1:30-3:30 p.m.: "Words That Hit - Words That Hug," for parents and children in grades one through three, is an interactive program that explores how words help and hurt people.

  • 3:-4:30 p.m.: "You Be the Judge," for parents and children in grades four through six, will have families interact to test ethical dilemmas, determine verdicts and examine solutions Jewish sources suggest.

  • 6:15-7:30 p.m.: "I Have Some Questions About God," for Jewish educators, will assist teachers in ability to teach and talk about God in the classroom.
Additionally, the Israel Connection will have a display of books available for purchase and Bellini Baby Furniture has donated a $500 gift certificate to be given away in a raffle for all participants in the workshops.

Feldman says she hopes that Jewish Parenting Day will become an annual event in the Valley.
