Federation hosts first Men's Night Out

Basketball analyst Dick Vitale will be featured as the guest speaker at the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix's first-ever Men's Night Out.

More than 400 men are expected to attend the event, a dinner at the Arizona Biltmore, according to Lanny Lahr, event chairman.

"We really wanted to have a way we could say thank you to the men - to all the men who give a minimum gift of $360 or more to the federation - to let them know how much we appreciate that donation ... because it does go to a lot of wonderful causes," he explained.

The event, which will be held Feb. 24, will feature ESPN and ABC Sports college basketball analyst Vitale, a popular speaker at federation fund-raisers throughout the country, according to Lahr.

At Men's Night Out, Vitale said he'll talk about "making it in the game of life (and) about having pride in whatever one does. I talk about people who have been successful, like the people in the audience, giving back and extending a hand to those who need a helping hand and are battling adversity."

Vitale is himself a philanthropist, including involvement in the Boys & Girls Club of Sarasota in his home state of Florida, where the annual Dick Vitale Sports Night has raised $830,000 to date. Additionally, he sits on the board of The V Foundation, an organization that has raised more than $30 million for cancer research grants.

"We want to give more and more so we can put an end to that disease that affects all people, no matter what race or religion. It comes after everyone," he said.

In addition to discussing philanthropy, Vitale said his public speaking engagements include his views on the formula for success in life.

"If you have a passion - a love for what you're doing - combine it with great work ethic (and) make good, intelligent decisions in your personal life, it usually equals winning in the game of life," Vitale said.
