'Passion' screenings scheduled

Valley clergy and local organizations are providing opportunities to discuss the controversial Mel Gibson-produced film, "The Passion of the Christ," which depicts the final 12 hours of Jesus' life - allegedly blaming his crucifixion upon the Jews of his day.

Two special screenings of the film have been scheduled, one sponsored by White Dove Communications and Extreme Faith Productions, and the other through an interfaith effort by four Valley houses of worship.

The first screening is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wed-nesday, Feb. 25, at Harkins Superstition Springs 25, located at Superstition Free-way, east of Power Road, Mesa. Cost is $8, with group discounts available. There will be a discussion after the film. Scheduled to attend are Messianic Rabbi Jack Zimmer-man, Christian pastors, Cath-olic priests and Aramaic language experts.

White Dove Commun-ications is a local Christian publicity firm, and Extreme Faith Productions is a Christian concert promoter.

Reservations are required. Call 602-299-6369.

Temple Beth Israel, Temple Solel, Scottsdale Presby-terian Church and Chaparral Christian Church are spon-soring another screening on Sunday, March 7, at Harkins Shea 14, 7345 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale.

The screening begins at 6 p.m. with opening remarks by Rabbi Stephen Kahn of Temple Beth Israel, Rabbi Alan Berlin of Temple Solel, the Rev. Dr. Bruce Johnson of Scottsdale Presbyterian Church, and Dr. Frank Shirvinski of Chaparral Christian Church, followed by the movie at 6:30 p.m.

Afterward, there will be an open discussion. Tickets are $7. For information or for advance purchase, call Temple Beth Israel, 480-951-0323, or Temple Solel, 480-991-7414.

A precursor to the film's release is a live-by-satellite presentation with Gibson at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at Love of Christ Lutheran Church, 1525 N. Power Road, Mesa. Joining Gibson on the simulcast will be director Paul Lauer and Lee Stroble, author of "The Case for the Christ." Gibson will show clips from the film, offer commentary and take part in a live question and answer session. Call 602-299-6369.
