Obituaries

Ethel Miller Shaner

Ethel Miller Shaner of Scottsdale died Jan. 21, 2004. She was 93. She was born in New York City and moved to Arizona from Denver in 1983. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughters Phyllis Kotin of Paradise Valley and Myrna Burdick of Castle Rock, Colo.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held in Denver. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary.

Contributions are suggested to Hospice of Arizona, 2222 W. Northern Ave. #A-100, Phoenix, 85021.



Jakob Magier

Jakob Magier of Phoenix died Jan. 22, 2004. He was 89. He was born in Poland and moved to Arizona from Florida in 2001. He was a member of Chabad of Phoenix.

Survivors include his daughters, Jieti "Yetta" Altfas of Glendale and Esther of Mesa; son Mark of Phoenix; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Phoenix Memorial Park with Rabbi Zalman Levertov officiating. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary.

Contributions are suggested to Chabad of Arizona, 2110 E. Lincoln Drive, Phoenix, 85016.



Ida Adelman

Ida Adelman of Sun City died Jan. 25, 2004. She was 90. She was born in Philadelphia and moved to Arizona from Philadelphia in 1980. She was a retired analyst for the U.S. government and a real estate agent. She was a member of Temple Beth Shalom in Sun City.

Survivors include her sister, Toby Rosenthal of Glendale; and brother, Alex of Phoenix.

Services were held at Sunland Memorial Park. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary.



Joe Levine

Joe Levine of Phoenix died Jan. 1, 2004. He was 82. He was born in Romania and moved to Arizona from Cincinnati in 1977. He was a retired salesman and served in the U.S. Air Force.

Survivors include his wife, Adianne; daughter, Julie; son, Jonathan; and sister, Marilyn Altman.

Services were held at Green Acres Mortuary and Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Green Acres Mortuary and Cemetery. Contributions are suggested to American Cancer Society, 2929 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix, 85016 and American Heart Association, 2929 S. 48th St., Tempe, 85282.



Larry R. Smeltzer

Larry R. Smeltzer, age 57, of Scottsdale passed away January 26, 2004. He was a professor at ASU in the Business Department and held the position of past Department Chair of Supply Chain Management. Larry was a member of Temple Chai. He is survived by his loving wife Toni; stepsons Joshua and Douglas Lipsky; sisters Mary Warner and Ruth Plowman; brother Preston Smeltzer; nieces Joan Blake and Donna Murphy; and nephews Justin Smeltzer and Joshua Smeltzer.

Larry was an extremely special man who will be sorely missed by the ASU community, his Temple Chai family, and all who were lucky enough to have known him. The world is most certainly a sadder place without him.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at Temple Chai Sanctuary. Contributions in Larry's memory are requested to Temple Chai Outreach Fund, 4645 E. Marilyn Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85012. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.



Dr. Samuel Aron Smith

Dr. Samuel Aron Smith of Peoria died January 23, 2004. He was 68. Sam was born in Binghamton, N.Y. and moved to Phoenix in 1967. He was a retired pediatrician.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Elisabeth; daughter Lise (Brad) Klein of Phoenix; son David (Michele) Smith of Phoenix; and five grandchildren, Zachary, Mason, Jordan, Ali and Max.

Services were held at Temple Beth Israel with Rabbi Stephen Kahn officiating. Contributions are suggested to Arizona State University, Cancer Research Institute, PO Box 871604, Tempe, AZ 85287-1604; and Metro Phoenix Council BBYO, 12701 N. Scottsdale Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85254.
