ObituariesTzedakah Fund founder diesStanley Mayersohn of Scottsdale died Jan. 16, 2004. He was 82. He was born in Covington, Ky., and moved to Arizona from California in 1974. He was a retired certified public accountant, the founder of Tzedakah Fund and served in the United States Army during World War II.Survivors include his sons Harley of Tucson and Michael of Long Beach, Calif.; sister, Alice Spilberg of Studio City, Calif.; and three grandchildren. Services were held at Green Acres Cemetery, with Rabbi Barton G. Lee officiating. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Mayersohn founded Tzedakah Fund with his wife Betty in 1984. The nonprofit organization donates money to causes in Israel that often don't receive funding by the Israeli government, including battered women's shelters, rape crisis centers, clinics for blind children and more. As of June 2003, Tzedakah Fund has sent more than $400,000 to Israel, said treasurer Bob Segalbaum. Carl Hammerschlag, husband of Elaine Hammerschlag, who became co-president of the fund with Sue Rutkin in 2003, said, "I think what Stan and Betty did was share their love of Israel with this community. Stan Mayersohn served as a living reminder that when we come from a place of Jewish soul, each of us contributes to our survival as a people, and that connection with Israel allows us to continue as a tribe. He was born in Chicago and moved to Arizona from Ohio in 1973. He was a real estate broker. He was a member of Scottsdale Charros, Verde Vaqueros and was a co-chairperson of the Fiesta Bowl Invitational Tennis Tournament.Survivors include his wife Mimi; son, Brandon; daughter, Jordan; parents, Shiffy and Bob Cohen of Tucson; and brothers Avi of Toronto and David of Los Angeles. Services were held at Paradise Memorial Gardens, with Rabbi Peter S. Levi officiating. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Scottsdale Charros Community Foundation, 4251 N. Brown Ave. #2, Scottsdale 85251. Esther RobinsonEsther Robinson of Riverside, Ill., died Jan. 15, 2004. She was 91. She was born in Chicago. She was a former resident of Phoenix. She was a homemaker.Survivors include her daughter, Anita Rose of Glendale; son, Harlow of Riverside, Ill.; sister, Etta Klein of Menlo Park, Calif.; and three grandchildren. Services were held at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, with Rabbi Albert Plotkin officiating. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Jewish Community Center Seniors, 1805 W. Montebello Ave., Phoenix 85015. Stanley GubinStanley Gubin of Sun City West died Jan. 20, 2004. He was 80. He was born in Poland and moved to Arizona from Missouri in 1992. He was a former owner of a family grocery store. He was a member of Beth Emeth Congregation of the West Valley.Survivors include his wife Shirley; son, Barry of Ladue, Mo.; daughter, Phyllis Bern of Scottsdale; sister, Edith Grossman of Vernon Hills, Ill.; and six grandchildren. Services were held at Sunland Memorial Park, with Rabbi Leo Abrami officiating. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Arrietta LewisArrietta Lewis, age 92, passed away January 19, 2004, in Scottsdale. She was born in Cleveland and moved to Scottsdale four years ago. Survivors include her sister Evelyn Weiss, nephews Howard (Sharyn) Weiss and Jerrold (Elaine) Weiss, niece Wendy (Melvin) Weinberg and many great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services and interment were held in Cleveland. Contributions in her memory are requested to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014.
