Funding a need

Editorial

Thanks to the 2002 Greater Phoenix Jewish Community Study, we at last have in hand data revealing a range of community needs. The Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix is taking steps to fund programs and services that address these needs.

Through a grant from the Alvin A. Kraus Fund, the federation is helping five organizations work to improve the quality of life for the Valley's Jewish community.
  • The Bureau of Jewish Education's "Try a Slice of Jewish Life" addresses the community's low affiliation rate.

  • The "Hillel Awareness Project" of the Hillel Jewish Student Center at Arizona State University enables the program staff to reach out to Jewish college-age students.

  • Jewish Family & Children's Service "Helping Hands" program aids Jewish individuals and families in need of immediate financial assistance.

  • The Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center "Senior Kosher Meals Program" provides sustenance to the homebound and to those who struggle to put food on their tables.

  • The interactive mimeo Board at the Pardes Jewish Day School helps special needs students with note-taking.
The demographic study revealed painful realities about our community. Through the Kraus Fund, the federation is addressing these realities head-on.

Aid for advocacy

"Advocacy" can be a daunting word.

It demands education, training, determination, experience and most of all, action.

Jewish News will be running advocacy stories throughout the year, starting with "Opportunities for advocacy" (see Page 10), which outlines ways to become a political advocate.

In the coming weeks and months, look for coverage of student advocacy, including ways to speak up for the state of Israel; coverage of "Washington 14," the United Jewish Communities' National Young Leadership Conference at the nation's capital; and advocacy under 18, about how students are learning to participate in democracy.

Another feature will highlight Phoenix's sociological changes throughout the years - such as the abolition of "restricted" hotels and resorts - and how the Jewish community has played a positive role.

We also plan to run profiles of local leaders who have made a difference in our community. Please send us suggestions.

Our goal is make it easier for readers both to become more active with the array of local organizations and to become more comfortable as advocates for the things we care most about.
