Helen Elaine Shaphren

Helen Elaine Shaphren, age 81, of Phoenix passed away peacefully with her children at her side January 11, 2004.

Helen was born in St. Louis to Harvey Lieberstein and Rosalie (Abrams) Lieberstein.

Helen began her teaching career by taking over a Sunday School class while still a teenager. After graduating from Washington University in St. Louis and Central Institute for the Deaf, Helen taught in Des Moines, Iowa before moving to Phoenix in 1947. She pioneered oral education for the deaf in Arizona. When the State Superintendent of Public Instruction insisted there was no need for special education, Helen started her own school in her home. The program was later incorporated into Gompers Clinic. Over the years, Helen often "retired" from teaching, returning whenever someone called with a special need. In later years, her love of teaching prompted her to become a docent for the Phoenix Art Museum.

Jacob, her loving husband of over 56 years, and other family members preceded her in death. She will be cherished and missed by her son Paul, daughter Susanne, niece Eve as well as other family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please honor Helen's memory with a contribution to the charity of your choice. A memorial service was held Tuesday, January 13, 2004, at Temple Beth Israel in Scottsdale. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.
