Chandler rabbi named 'Woman of Year'

Rabbi Bonnie Koppell, spiritual leader of Temple Beth Sholom in Chandler, has been named 2003 Woman of the Year by the Mesa Citizens of the Year Committee.

Koppell is Arizona's first female rabbi and has served Temple Beth Sholom since 1987. She also serves as a lieutenant colonel in the U .S. Army Reserve, where she has been chaplain for 25 years.

She's been involved in the Child Crisis Center, East Valley; the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration committee; Mesa United Way; and other groups.

The organization has recognized leadership, volunteerism and humanitarian efforts of Mesa citizens since 1935. Individuals are nominated by members of the community and selected by a committee made up of previous winners.

Albert L. McHenry, dean of technology and applied sciences at ASU East, was named Man of the Year. Koppell and McHenry will be honored at a dinner 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, at the Mesa Hilton Pavilion, 1011 W. Holmes Ave.

Cost is $32.

For tickets, call Frank Bennett Sr., 480-969-1818.
