Women in the arts

An author, two artists and a comedienne will be featured in this year's Hadassah Jewish Women in the Arts program, Jan. 25 at Westin Kierland Resort and Spa in Scottsdale.

Author Marcia Fine of Tempe, author of "Gossip.com" and "Boomerang: When Life Comes Back to Bite You," will read an excerpt from her new book "Paper Children" and speak about the importance of documenting family stories (see related story).

Also featured at the Hadassah program will be Scottsdale resident Sheila Groman, who started quilting in 1975.

Her quilts include a "Flora of the Bible" series; a Mogen David series; "Children of Israel," based on a passage from the Bible; Arizona landscape wall hangings; and a montage of famous landmarks of Jerusalem.

Her quilts are currently on exhibit at the Sahuaro Ranch quilt show, and at terminal four at Sky Harbor Airport, on level three by Southwest Airlines security. One of her quilts appears in the "Quilt Art 2004 Engagement Calendar," available in bookstores. Groman also planned and designed the Jewish Celebrity Quilt currently on display at the Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center in Scottsdale.

During the Hadassah event, Groman will briefly discuss the history of quilting in America and show several of her quilts. Quilts and note cards featuring her quilts will be available for purchase, with a percentage of proceeds benefiting Hadassah.

Artist Erin Robbins of Boulder, Colo., creates expressionistic paintings that feature the human form with abstract geometric shapes and symbols. Her oil and acrylic paintings explore relationships between people, nature and culture. At the luncheon, she will speak about creating art as a spiritual path and about her personal experience as an artist.

Los Angeles comedienne Shawn Pel-ofsky is a regular at the Comedy Store and Improv and has opened up at performances by Richard Lewis, Bill Maher and Huey Lewis and the News.

She's performed for Hadassah groups throughout the United States. "I'm pretty much a Jewish people's comedian," she says. During her stand-up routine, she'll talk about her family, newsworthy events and her experiences of growing up Jewish in Oklahoma.

"There will not be one serious note," she says. "There will be no tears shed."
