A word of thanks

Editorial

We are indebted to you, our readers.

The enhanced quality and growing diversity of our reporting during the past year reflects the connections we have made with readers from Sun City West to Sun Lakes, from Chandler to Prescott.

Two examples are found in our Hanukkah coverage. We reviewed nearly 200 entries for our Hanukkah art contest published in our Dec. 19 issue. We also called for readers to submit photos capturing the way you celebrated Hanukkah (See "Lots of latkes," Page 10); thank you for sending us too many to print.

We also thank you for your letters to the editor. On our opinion pages, our goal is to facilitate dialogue in the community - to educate, to enrich and to challenge. Judging from the number and variety of your letters, we are succeeding. At times, we have even fostered constructive dialogue between readers; and on occasion, you have sent us so many letters that we have devoted the entire page to your feedback.

Thank you for understanding our space constraints. When we have asked you to edit down your letters to the 200-word limit, the majority of the time you have responded positively.

For our Internet-savvy readers, we want you to know that The List - the weekly e-mail informing you of the content of the current week's issue - has grown to 1,170 subscribers.

Jewish News strives to create a historical record of our community. In every issue, our readers learn of births, b'nai mitzvah, weddings, anniversaries and deaths - and about the people and events that comprise our community.

Reporting the news and being a historical record require a strong visual element - striking photos. Thank you for the photos you send us every week. Please understand that we publish only the best, and that some simply cannot be used due to poor reproduction quality.

In the coming year, when you send us digital photos, remember that they need to be at least 300 dpi. If possible, please have no more than four people per photo and action shots are preferred over posed.

Remember that Jewish News does not have a professional photographer, and with our small editorial staff, we depend upon you to help us document the wide array of events that take place throughout the year.

Thank you for contacting us weeks and even months in advance about your major events; this enables us to plan our editorial calendar accordingly.

We at Jewish News have a sacred trust and responsibility to report to you objectively, responsibly and free of undue influence. In that spirit, we have reached out to you, and you have reached back to us. Many times, a simple conversation, a photograph capturing the moment or an offhand reference becomes the seed for an in-depth story.

We are looking ahead to the new year with hope and confidence, in partnership with you, our readers.
