Former federation executive director dies

Saul Silverman

Saul Silverman of Phoenix died Oct. 31, 2003. He was 79. He was born in New Orleans and was a 37-year resident of Phoenix.

He was the executive director of Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix for 11 years from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s, and later served as executive director of the Jewish Federation of San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas, for three years. He also worked with Cornerstone Church of San Antonio to assist in the church's Night to Honor Israel event in the 1980s. Silverman was also a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Rita; sons, Barry of Phoenix and Michael of Coto De Caza, Calif.; sister, Ruth Meisel of New Orleans; and brother, Elliot of Sun City West.

Services were held at Sinai Mortuary Chapel with Rabbi Alan Berlin officiating. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Kivel Campus of Care, 3020 N. 36th St., Phoenix 85018.
