Bernice Lunin SchnurerBernice Lunin Schnurer, age 79, October 29, 1923 - October 23, 2003, moved from New York City to Paradise Valley in 1961 with her husband Harold and their two children. She became very active in a wide range of activities that helped build Phoenix into the community it is today. She volunteered her skills as a fundraiser and event organizer for a number of Valley organizations, including service as president of both the Opera League and Symphony Guild. She and her husband were also early and active supporters of civil rights, each serving as president of the board of the Phoenix Urban League.Bernice also took a special interest in the Jewish community, serving for many years on the board of the American Jewish Committee and remaining involved with AJC until her death; participating in the United Order of True Sisters and numerous Jewish charitable causes; and co-founding Temple Solel, where she remained an active supporter. In a 1996 article in Jewish News about Temple Solel, in fact, she attributed the congregation's specialness in part to the priority it placed from the start on encouraging women to play prominent roles on the temple's boards and committees. Harold, her husband of 38 years, was her constant companion and her greatest admirer; not only did they share an interest in civic commitment, they also traveled extensively around the world together throughout their lives. Despite her broad interests, she was foremost a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived, and will be deeply missed, by her son Eric and his wife Linda; daughter Danielle Gold and her husband Stuart; stepson Tony; and grandson Ryan. Memorial service were held Sunday, October 26, 2003 at Temple Solel, with burial at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Queens, New York.
