Republic mixes Jewish, Messianic worship

Messianic Jewish congregation was included under a listing of "Jewish High Holiday Services" in the Sept. 20 issue of The Arizona Republic.

Beth Yachad appeared alongside Har Zion Congregation and Temple Kol Ami in the calendar listing of the religion page and on the azcentral.com Web site.

On the same calendar, under "Workshops/seminars," was a "Jewish Evangelism and Discipleship" program offered at Beth Yachad.

Rose Tring, Republic city editor, said she has overseen the calendar listings for 3 1/2 years and that no one ever questioned Messianic Jewish congregations being listed with Jewish congregations.

"I am an equal opportunity listing person and let the congregations list themselves," she said.

A clerk puts together the calendar listings, said Michael Clancy, Republic religion reporter.

"If I had known about (the Beth Yachad listing), I would have intercepted it," he said. "I am certainly aware of the difference between Judaism and Messianic Judaism, that Messianic Jews accept Jesus as Lord and savior," he noted.

Clancy said he would inform the clerk of that difference.

Both Tring and Clancy said they had never thought about creating a separate heading for Messianic Jewish worship services, to avoid confusion for Republic readers. However, Clancy said he would not want to mislead readers.

Beth Yachad's listing appeared to be a mistake, based on lack of knowledge, said Cathy Wolf, director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix.
