Chabad investigates derogatory mailing

LEISAH NAMM
Managing Editor
E-Mail
An internal investigation is underway at Chabad of Scottsdale regarding a letter that was mailed on copies of the synagogue's letterhead.

The letter, which Rabbi Yossi Levertov said is fraudulent, included derogatory remarks about the organiz- ation's financial operations and was sent in Levertov's name. A note at the bottom instructed readers to contact the writer with comments, but "please do not call, rather send me an e-mail" and listed an e-mail address that Levertov said does not belong to him.

The synagogue office began receiving calls about the letter on Wednesday, Sept. 24, and sent disclaimers to its e-mail list later that day.

"Please be aware that this letter was not written or sent by Rabbi Levertov or anyone else at Chabad," stated the disclaimer. "These envelopes were stolen from our office."

Levertov said that it's difficult to gauge how many people received the letters, but it appears that it went to at least one of the synagogue's mailing lists.

At press time, the police had not been notified.

Levertov said he appreciates the supportive phone calls from "all our friends and supporters."
