Obituaries

Bernard Shelley

Bernard Shelley of Chandler died Sept. 21, 2003. He was 89. He was born in New York City and moved to Arizona in 1958. He was a retired teacher at Dysart High School and a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Jewish War Veterans.

Survivors include his wife, Beatrice; daughter, Susan Berkowitz of Tempe; son, Laurence of Columbus, Ohio; and three grandchildren.

Services were held at Beth El Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary.



Edward L. Goldberg

Edward L. Goldberg of Trenton, N.J., died Sept. 13, 2003. He was 84. He was born in Chester, Pa., and was a frequent visitor to the Valley. He was a realtor and a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a New Jersey commissioner of real estate and a member of the New Jersey board of real estate.

Survivors include his wife, Edith; daughter, Elissa Cohen Goldberg of Lakewood, N.J.; sons, Stanley of Paradise Valley and Jeffrey of San Diego; sisters Rose Goldberg and Shirley Rosenberg, both of Trenton; brother, Jacob of Trenton; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held in Trenton. Arrangements were made by Orland's Ewing Memorial Chapel in Trenton. Contributions are suggested to Har Zion Congregation, 6140 E. Thunderbird Road, Scottsdale 85254; or Jewish National Fund, 1645 E. Missouri, Suite 110, Phoenix 85016.



Janet H. Schneidman

Janet H. Schneidman, age 75, passed away September 16, 2003 in Scottsdale. She was born in Chicago and has been a resident of the Valley for the past 41 years. She was a member of Temple Beth Israel.

Survivors include her son Jeff (Ann) Schneidman, daughter Susan (Joel) Moss, sister Mildred (Bernie) Grae and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her late husband Terry Schneidman.

Funeral services were held Sunday, September 21, 2003 in Sinai Mortuary Chapel in Phoenix. Contributions in her memory are suggested to Temple Beth Israel, 10460 N. 56th St., Scottsdale, AZ 85253.



Nat Silverman

Nat Silverman, age 94, passed away September 21, 2003 in his home in Ashland, Ore. He was a prominent leader of the Phoenix Jewish community for nearly half a century. Mr. Silverman, who was in the furniture business in Phoenix, was a devoted community service volunteer. He was a past president of Temple Beth Israel and at one time was principal of its religious school. He also held leadership positions in the Jewish Federation of Phoenix, B'nai B'rith, Kivel Geriatric Center, and the Phoenix Jewish Community Center.

Mr. Silverman's wife Sylvia died in 1998, after 66 years of marriage. He is survived by his son Ron and daughter-in-law Myra of Ashland; son Andy Silverman and daughter-in-law Starr Sanders of Tucson; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 24, 2003 in Sinai Mortuary Chapel. Contributions in his memory can be made to the Pre-School Fund of Temple Emek Shalom, P.O. Box 1107, Ashland, OR 97520.
