Arts briefsYiddish songs in concert"Dos Yiddische Lid: A Concert of Yiddish Songs and Chazzanut" will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Temple Beth Israel, 10460 N. 56th St., Scottsdale. The event features Chazzan Chayim Feifel, a faculty member at Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem and four other cantorial schools in Israel. Call 480-951-0323.Hadassah show wins an EmmyHadassah Medical Organization in Jerusalem was the subject of the Emmy-winning program "Jerusalem ER," which recently aired on "The News with Brian Williams" on the CNBC network. The show received the award for "Outstanding Coverage of a Continuing News Story in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast" by the National Television Academy on Sept. 3."Jerusalem ER," reported by NBC correspondent Martin Fletcher, focuses on Hadassah's Emergency Room and Trauma Unit and its director, Professor Avi Rivkind. Loeb, Zappa make Arizona appearanceLisa Loeb and Dweezil Zappa visited the Valley in September to promote the pair's new television show. "Dweezil and Lisa" will air on the Food Network begin- ning in January.Loeb and Zappa held a concert in Tempe on Sept. 24 to air on the show's first segment. While in Phoenix, Zappa, Loeb and the Food Network crew are also cooking with Chef Mark Tarbell and visiting the Frank Lloyd Wright house. Loeb's most recent compact disc releases include "Cake and Pie" and "Hello Lisa." She made the Billboard charts in 1993 with her singe "Stay (I Missed You)" from the 1993 film "Reality Bites." She has made television appearances on "The Chris Isaak Show" and "The Drew Carey Show." Zappa's latest CD, "Automatic," is his first release under his own name in nearly a decade. A Grammy-nominee composer, Zappa penned the theme for "The Jamie Kennedy Show" and served as musical director for the WB Network's series "On the Spot." Hollywood and the Holocaust"The AMC Project: Hollywood and the Holocaust" will premiere Tuesday, Oct. 7, on the AMC network. The documentary traces Hollywood's complex response to Nazism and the Holocaust over the last six decades. Directed by the award-winning documentary filmmaker Daniel Anker, the show travels in time to explore Charlie Chaplin's first usage of the word "Jew" on the big screen, and through the war years when President Eisen-hower brought Hollywood moguls to the liberated concentration camps.The film also focuses on personal expression and the effort to overcome censorship and production codes with films such as "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "The Pawnbroker." "Hollywood and the Holocaust" includes personal accounts by survivors and community response to the films "Sophie's Choice" and "Schindler's List." Check local listings for showtimes. |
