Obituaries

Irving Slutsky

Irving Slutsky of Phoenix died Sept. 12, 2003. He was 80. He was born in Buffalo, N.Y., and moved to Arizona in 1973. He served as a U.S. Marine during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Beck of Scottsdale; daughter, Marcy Lane of Scottsdale; son, Marty Slutsky of Columbia, Md.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services were held at Paradise Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix 85014; or The International Myeloma Foundation, 12650 Riverside Drive, #206, North Hollywood, CA 91607.



Hermann L. Scherer

Hermann L. Scherer of Phoenix died Sept. 15, 2003. He was 84. He was born in Austria and moved to Arizona in 1981 from Connecticut. He was a retired postal worker and a United States Army veteran of World War II. He was also a member of Jewish War Veterans and a member of Beth El Congregation.

Survivors include his wife, Anne Scherer of Phoenix; sons, Harry Kelman of Las Vegas, Burt Kelman of Stratford, Conn., and Mark Kelman of Phoenix; sister, Erna Langer of Newark, N.J.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Beth El Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, 100 Raoul Wallenberg Place SW, Washington, D.C., 20024-2126.



Marilyn Kolsky

Marilyn Kolsky of Phoenix died Sept. 11, 2003. She was 68. She was born in Philadelphia and moved to Arizona in 1972. She was a retired sales clerk.

Survivors include her daughters, Lisa Kool and Janice Tuerff, both of Phoenix; and three grandchildren.

Services were held at Paradise Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix 85014.



Sylvia R. Hampton

Sylvia R. Hampton of Phoenix died Sept. 10, 2003. She was 80. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to Arizona in 1986. She was a retired secretary.

Survivors include her daughters, Heather Carney of Phoenix and Aimee Anderson of El Mirage; son, Gregory Williams of New Paltz, N.Y.; sisters, Mildred Goldman of Phoenix and Julie Berstein of Malverne, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services were held at Green Acres Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Alzheimer's Association, 1028 E. McDowell Road, Phoenix 85006.



Harry Shapera

Harry Shapera, age 83, of Phoenix, passed away September 12, 2003. He was born November 1, 1919 in Rockville, Conn. and came to the Valley in 1977. Harry was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army. He was a professional musician who played trombone with many big bands in the 1940's. He also played for many famous personalites. Harry was also a music teacher.

He is survived by his wife Esther of 58 years; daughters Lois (Randy) Gamiel of Phoenix, Ellen Ben-Shalom of Hercules, Calif. and Barbara Shapera of El Cerrito, Calif.; brother Jacob Shapera of Rockville; and five grandchildren, Keri (Tim) Eckstein, Kimmie (Evan) Green, Tamir and Dory Ben-Shalom and Elana Pera.

Graveside funeral services were held Sunday, September 14, 2003 at Beth El Cemetery. Contributions in his memory are requested to Leukemia Foundation of Arizona, 3404 S. McClintock Dr., Tempe, AZ 85282; or Congregation Or Chadash, c/o Salo Herman, 9680 E. Davenport Dr., Scottsdale, AZ 85260. Arrangments by Sinai Mortuary.
