Young man becomes bar mitzvah in Israel

David Dulberg, 13, became a bar mitzvah atop Masada on July 21. The following are excerpts from a letter Dulberg sent to family and friends after his return.
Dear Family and Friends,

As many of you know, I recently traveled to Israel with my family and became a bar mitzvah atop Masada. I want to share with you some of my thoughts about our remarkable journey.

We started our trip in Jerusalem. This city had the most meaning to me because of its rich history. As I walked along the streets of the Old City, I could almost envision the ancient battles between the Jews and the Babylonians leading to the destruction of the First Temple in 586 B.C.E., and I could imagine the flames started by the Romans that engulfed the Second Temple in 70 C.E. After visiting many sites where important events took place, I now have a deeper appreciation for the thousands of brave Jews who gave their lives throughout history so that there would be a Jewish homeland in Israel. Without those courageous men and women I don't think Judaism would still be practiced today.

The most unique feeling I experienced in Israel occurred as I stood before the Western Wall. As I prayed before the wall I felt as though I was standing face to face with G-d. I can't quite explain it, but I just felt as though I was at peace with life. I was finally able to let my emotions go without even having to say a word. It was one of the best feelings I have experienced in my life. From my visit to Jerusalem, I gained a better understanding about why it was such an important city for Christians, Muslims and Jews, which makes Jerusalem unlike any other city in the world.

The high point of my trip was becoming a bar mitzvah atop Masada. I was sad that all of my friends and family couldn't share this day with me, but I kept you all in my thoughts and in my prayers during that extraordinary day. ... The bar mitzvah service itself was a very moving service because I felt a direct connection to all of the history surrounding me. I was very proud of how I read my Torah portion and I'm sorry all of you couldn't see it. That was singly the greatest moment of my life.

As I look back on my decision to have my bar mitzvah in Israel, I have no regrets. I made the decision because I felt it would have special meaning to have it in Israel. After spending two weeks there I'm positive I made the right choice.

It is unfortunate that the media portrays Israel in such negative light. As a result, most Americans wouldn't even think about making the trip my family did. From the crowds shopping and listening to music at the Ben Yehuda Street pedestrian mall in Jerusalem, to the cafes and restaurants on the shores of the Mediterranean in Tel Aviv, Israel is alive and vibrant.

I encourage all of you to disregard the media portrayal of Israel and make the journey to see Israel for yourself, and you will discover the most fascinating place on the planet.

Shalom,
David
